Abstaining from the internet, What a struggle!

Abstaining from the internet was very hard for me. I use the internet for everything I do, from checking e-mail, staying current on the news, communication, school, work, and for leisure time. It was hard for me not to be able to check blackboard because when I was doing homework for other classes I wanted to look at notes off blackboard but I couldn’t. This was a big struggle for me and made it hard to do my homework accurately and efficiently. I check facebook during my downtime and when I need a break from studying, so I had to replace that which was hard because honestly I didn’t know what to do. I turned on the T.V to take a break but then I got sucked into a show and ended up taking too long of a break. I am on facebook quite a bit, probably too much, so not being able to check up on friends or look at new pictures someone posted was hard. It is my way taking my mind off of studying.
The biggest problem I had from abstaining from the internet was school. Internet is a big part of school. I am taking three online classes right now so I couldn’t do work for those classes for a whole day which actually put me behind and I kept wanting to log on to blackboard to do my discussion boards but I couldn’t and it was hard. Our generation is so technologically based and we rely on the internet for everything. Telling our generation that they cannot use the internet is the end of the world for some people. I e-mail my family quite a bit and my niece was born a month ago and I have not been able to meet her so my brother will web cam me when she is active. My brother e-mailed new pictures of her and called me to get on the webcam but I couldn’t and it was so hard to not be able to see her and look at new pictures of her. He actually told me to just get on really quick but I told him that I couldn’t and I wasn’t going to give in. I found that my room was very neat and tidy within those 24 hours, and my car was clean. Overall, this was a struggle, but I got through and stuck it out. I did not fall of the wagon and it was a success, but I don’t plan on abstaining from it again anytime soon. I like my internet and enjoy having access to it whenever I want.

  1. It’s funny that you and I were both pretty consistent in our internet habits. We both mentioned that we look at Facebook during our down time or when we’re bored, and that it was a struggle not to check Blackboard and look at grades. After reading through a few other blogs, it has become pretty evident to me that our generation, as you mentioned, relies very heavily on the internet, regardless on the importance of what we’re actually using it for. Granted, looking at new photos of your niece is important, but I assume we can both agree that checking Facebook and seeing our friend’s status updates isn’t. It was difficult, but hey, we did it!

  2. Your blog sounds a lot like my own. It seems like you get on the Internet to actually get some homework or something else done, or you just get on because you're bored. I do the same thing. If I'm bored sitting at home, nothing is on TV, the next best thing is to check your friends statuses on Facebook. You also mentioned that you believe our generation relies on the internet for almost everything. Once again I completely agree with you! I could barely make 24 hours without the Internet, and I actually relapsed twice when trying to complete this first blog assignment. The Internet is now apart of our daily lives, and we need for much more then we think we do.

  3. I love that I am not the only one who found it difficult not to use the internet. I was thinking how difficult it would be to abstain from both the internet and the television. I normally substitute television watching for internet use. There is an interesting Oprah show in which they took away a whole families internet use and television watching in an attempt to force the family to spend time together. It really works. As a mother I have found that when I am not plugged into the computer or television I have more time for family. I thought it was interesting that you mentioned that when you get bored you enjoy internet use. Although the internet is a very useful tool I do not spend a whole lot of time recreating there. I am not a member of Facebook as most of my friends and family contact me directly. I find it interesting that more and more people are connecting with friends via the internet. I guess I am a little old fashioned.
